Big House Beans has a big mission: to give second chances, one cup of coffee at a time.
The company, which started in 2014 and has a roastery in Antioch, has opened its second coffee shop at 4770 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland’s Temescal district. Look for a full menu of espresso drinks, plus housemade Belgian waffles, paninis, toasts, smoothies, breakfast bowls and soft-serve in a hip, expansive cafe framed by a leafy living wall that spells out “Temescal.”
Together with wife and co-owner LeeAnn Krause, John Krause, a former San Quentin prison inmate, supports the hire of former inmates and those who have experienced homelessness, substance abuse and other barriers to employment. Big House’s original coffee shop, at 1155 Second St., Suite A, in Brentwood, has been open since 2018.
As for the coffee itself, Big House sources its beans from countries including Brazil, Ethiopia and Colombia, and blends and roasts them in-house. Their Finca Villa Ines, a medium-light single origin coffee from Colombia is a 2019 Golden Bean medal winner, as is the Lock & Key, a medium roast blend with jasmine and chocolate notes.
Big House is opening its next coffee shop in Pleasant Hill as early as spring 2022. Find more information at https://bighousebeans.com.
